These presentations are free and everyone is invited!

These presentations will help you to recognize the telltale signs of scams and fraud in areas of everyday life. The goal is to raise your awareness of how scammers operate and teach you how to spot a fraud or scam so that you can be aware and not fearful.
Weapons of Fraud – includes an overview of leading scams, techniques of con artists, and a discussion of the steps to take to avoid victimization. This is AARP’s Flagship presentation, is their oldest program, and has been presented most frequently and is regularly updated. While addressing a wide range of issues, it does not cover computer/cyber scams.
Dates to be determined for the following presentations:
Fraud, Scams, and Con Artists: Coming to a Computer Near You – the why, how and basic defense regarding scams perpetrated over the internet. This presentation is continuously revised to address the latest cyber threats and addresses how to recognize malicious eMails and pop-ups as well as Wi-Fi threats arising from the increased use of tablets and smart phones.
Identity Theft – an explanation of identity theft that explains how and why it occurs, provides instruction on protective steps, and explains what to do if it happens. This presentation presents techniques used by identity thieves to steal information.

Municipal Tree Inventory
Willey Building, Cabot
The Cabot municipal tree inventory training is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4th, beginning at 10:30 am at the Willey Hall.
I wrote about the Municipal Tree Inventory in the August Cabot Chronicles – Advice from the Tree Warden article. Joanne Garton of the Urban and Community Forestry Program to give the training on collecting the tree inventory data. Inventory work is always ongoing and during this training, we will be updating the inventory created by Roland Payne Sr during his time as Cabot Tree Warden. There will be some students from the Cabot school joining the training on September 4.
We will be looking at trees planted at the Willey building, the town green, Main street, and the recreation field by the pavilion. The new inventory will be update the inventory on paper with a digital version. The new inventory will be done with the app ArcGIS Survey123. Once complete the Municipal Tree Inventory can be shared online. If interested in learning about using this GIS app, install ArcGIS Survey123 on your smartphone from Google Play or the Apple store and join us for the training.

Join us for Cabot Ride the Ridges on Sunday, September 8th!
We are hoping to have as many Cabot folks come out as possible and enjoy the day together which is why we’re offering $25 registration for Cabot families – this means that your whole family can ride our 10k or 30k route for only $25!
There will be Woodbelly wood-fired pizza, Burtt’s donuts, apples and apple cider, Jasper Hill and Cabot cheeses, Magic Spoon Bakery bars, and shots of Talbert’s maple syrup. Come help us celebrate cycling the beautiful back roads of Cabot! The 10k ride takes about an hour and is a lot of fun with a rest stop on Coits Pond Rd.
This year the event will be a benefit ride for the Cabot Mentoring program.

Cabot Trails hopes you can join us at the grand opening of Burtt’s Orchard Trail this Sunday, September 8. We are excited to celebrate our expanding trail network with a community gathering with music, fun, food and exploration of the new trail. Cabot Trails will host the opening celebration of Burtt’s Orchard Trail at the new trailhead located right behind Burtt’s Orchard retail shop on Sunday, September 8 from 1 pm to 3 pm. This event includes live music, a scavenger hunt, cider and doughnuts, and trail walks to explore the newest addition to Cabot Trails.
The new Burtt’s Orchard Trail adds 1.3 miles to the Cabot Trails Network and promotes area economic vitality by promoting Cabot businesses. Our family is thrilled to launch this new partnership with Cabot Trails and the Town of Cabot. Burtt’s Orchard is a working farm, orchard, and sugaring operation that attracts many seasonal visitors to our area. This trail will provide an additional attraction to bring more folks to our farm and to Cabot, as well as provide an all-season recreational opportunity for Cabot residents. said Greg Burtt, owner of Burtt’s Orchard.
Burtt’s Orchard Trail is made possible by the Vermont Outdoor Recreation Economic Collaborative (VOREC) Community Grant Program, a grant program administered by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. The VOREC Grant funds have provided trail building supplies, parking improvements at trailheads and trail signage.
The Cabot Trails committee is proud to offer trails for people and families to spend time together, enjoying the beautiful vistas and landscapes of Cabot, while fostering a love of the outdoors and outdoor recreation. The Cabot Trails Network is composed of over 15 miles of trails, mostly on private land, for Cabot residents and visitors to enjoy.
We look forward to seeing you this Sunday at Burtt’s Orchard.

Cabot School, Common Road, Cabot, VT
Hi Everyone,
Here is the weekly Cabot School newsletter. Please note two upcoming events we hope you’ll attend- the Open House and Playground Opening on Sept. 13 and the Sustainability Community Forum on Sept. 16.
The Cabot Community Contra Dance will be re-starting on September 13, with dances on every 2nd Friday through June, at the Willey Building, 3084 Main St in Cabot! We are moving the start time a bit earlier to better accommodate families with kids, as well as anyone else who fades early, and the dances will now be 7:00-9:30.
The dances will feature live music by our amazing house band of talented musicians (you can just come and listen if you like!), and everything you need to know will be taught by a variety of Vermont callers! Here’s the line-up for the year, so you can mark your calendar now:
September 13 Robin Russell
October 11 Don Stratton
November 8 Luke Donforth
December 13 Lausanne Allen
January 10 Luke Donforth
February 14 Erin Smith
March 14 Karen Mueller-Harder
April 11 Lausanne Allen
May 9 Don Stratton
June 13 Erin Smith
We will also be scheduling a few family dances on weekend afternoons, featuring dances especially well-suited to the youngest members of the community. Dates will be announced in the Cabot Chronicle and on FPF.
Everyone is welcome, and anyone can dance with anyone, generally changing partners with each dance. You can come to the dance alone, with a friend or sweetheart, or your whole family! All dances are taught, but if you’ve never been to a dance, you are encouraged to arrive right at 7:00, as we will start with the simplest dances, and then we’ll build upon what you learn throughout the evening. No special footwork is needed, and the dances are easy to pick up, and are taught by the caller for the evening. (If you’ve ever done a square dance, that’s very similar, except in contra dances, you stand across from your partner, in a longways group.)
Admission is on a sliding scale, $5-10, but nobody is turned away for lack of funds! Bring your water bottle, or water and cups will be provided. Masks are welcomed but not required, and we’ll continue to open the lovely large windows in the hall for good ventilation!

Cabot School Community Forum September 16: Understanding Project-Based Learning
Have you heard the school community used the phrase Project-Based Learning? Are you curious to learn more and have a better understanding of how the project-based way of learning being used at Cabot School actually works?
The Cabot School Sustainability Committee is hosting their next Community Forum on Monday, Sept 16 to share this information. Cabot School teachers from three different grade levels (elementary, middle school and high school) make brief presentations about how a specific project at their grade level proceeds from start to finish while helping students build essential skills in literacy, math, communication, collaboration, etc. After each presentation, forum attendees will have the chance to discuss their impressions and to ask specific questions of the presenters.
This forum is open to the entire community!
Please join us at the CSPAC on Monday evening, September 16th to find out from school staff about how Cabot School students are learning through projects.
Our Town Meeting moderator Jeannie Johnson will again facilitate the forum, which will run from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Refreshments will be provided- hope to see you there!

The Cabot Flood Resiliency Task Force has scheduled a public outreach and input session on Wednesday, September 18, 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Willey Building auditorium. Our engineering consultants, SLR, will explain the research they’ve undertaken on the two tributaries that have been flooding and dumping debris on Cabot Village.
We want to keep Cabot residents updated on the work we’re undertaking, answer any questions you have, and hear your concerns and thoughts.
Another public meeting will be held after SLR’s work is completed this fall, to share their results and recommendations for action, and get your feedback on those. That date hasn’t been set yet.
There will be pizza, cookies and beverages available, free, as well as childcare. Food will be served at 6:00 and the meeting will start promptly at 6:30.
Please join us on September 18th!

This is only an exploratory committee; nothing will be done without much discussion and a vote by the town. You are welcome to attend this (and all!) school board meetings, but the first large discussion of a potential merger will be at a community forum that is being scheduled specifically on this topic for early November. Stay tuned.

Donations for Hurricane Victims
ThursdayOctober10 – SaturdayOctober12
9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Donations for Hurricane Victims
The Town of Cabot is proud to be able to help the victims that lost so much during the recent Helene Hurricane. We are trying to fill a truck that is located at 297 Vine Street in Barre. They will be leaving for North Carolina Sunday and Neighbors in Action is going to help with gathering much needed items for these people. You can drop off your items at NIA on Thursday and Friday- 9:00 – 12:00 & 4:00 – 6:00 pm
Saturday- 9:00 – 12:00. After that the donations will be delivered to the truck at 297 Vine Street in Barre hopefully on Saturday. You can even deliver your donations to the truck in Barre.
I am also looking for someone to deliver the donations which must be picked up by noon on Saturday, October 12 (perhaps a couple of pick up trucks). If anyone would wish to help with this delivery you may call Amy Hornblas at 802 563-3322 between the hours listed above, or myself at 802 279-1524.
The needs vary from diapers, canned goods, soap, boots, cat and dog food, feed for farm animals, down to combs, scissors and everything in between. So many have lost everything and I hope we can be a help to them.
People from different organizations came to help us from this area when we had the flood in 2023 and this is a small way to help them out. Thank you very much.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON DONATIONS
We were informed this morning that the truck that will be leaving for North Carolina is full and will not be able to take any more items. That is great news!
We have found another avenue for all of the goods that will be collected by Neighbors In Action over the next two days. A resident of Cabot will be taking a load now very soon and has agreed to take what we have collected. They have a large toy carrier that will hold what we have and will have collected. They will be at NIA on Friday to load what is there and then again on Saturday.
Please direct all inquiries to Amy Hornblas at 802 563-3322. The hours for drop off will be: Friday- 9:00 – 12:00 & 4:00 – 6:00 pm; Saturday- 9:00 – 12:00.

CVCOA and Mitzvah Fund Mobile Veterinary Clinic
Waterbury Senior Center, Stowe Street, Waterbury Village Historic District, VT
Is your animal companion feeling unwell or in need of an exam?
Are you putting off caring for your animal companion because of financial constraints or struggling to provide care due to cost?
Central Vermont Council on Aging (CVCOA) is sponsoring free veterinary services through the Mitzvah Fund Mobile Clinic at the Waterbury Area Senior Center.
Eligibility: This service is open to adults age 60+ who meet the income qualifications OR express special financial need.
Available Services: Exams, vaccinations, nail trimming, flea/tick products, heartworm products, blood and lab tests, dental care, small surgeries, and medications.
Please note that spots are limited and a waitlist will be started after the first 8 sign-ups. CVCOA will allow one animal per household. If another animal needs service, they will be put on the waitlist. Services will be determined during the phone consultation and review of the pet’s medical records. The veterinarian will prioritize appointments and will add technician appointments for additional pets that only need nail trims, ear cleanings, or gland expressions.
On the day of the clinic, each animal who sees the veterinarian will receive an exam and any appropriate vaccines. They may also receive a blood test if they need a Heartworm/Lyme test or if they need a future anesthetic event.
Any follow-up care will be done directly through the Mitzvah Fund. If the animal does need a dental or surgery the owner can fill out a Mitzvah Fund Application. Depending on income the cost could be completely subsidized. The Mitzvah Fund does NOT provide chronic ongoing care, emergency care, or most orthopedic procedures.
Contact Michelle Mahikoa, CVCOA’s Nutrition Outreach Specialist at 802-479-7524 to sign up or for more information! DEADLINE TO SIGN UP IS October 8.
